LIVING WATER

She told me everything that

she had done in her life:

Her five husbands and

casual lovers who came

and went as hurriedly as the months

on an old man’s calendar.

She spoke of her triumphs and defeats

on a sea where only sailors ruled.

I spoke little for there was,

as usual, nothing for me to say,

since silence was expected to play

the leading role and it was

the thing to do during cold winter nights.

Love was now the only covenant left,

since Eros had long departed.

I will listen to her without fear

while saying amen to her glory.
